Going home…

We had been with Oceans North for a week. We had seen wildlife, gone on hikes and visited many camps where local Inuit hunt during the short Arctic Summer. The days were becoming shorter. Fall was coming. We could feel it in the air. It was now time to head back home.

Grant and Sam were sailing south without me this year. I had been sick for a while and needed to go to a hospital in Ottawa to treat an infection in my right kidney. So in a mix of very confusing emotions, we gave each other one last great big group hug on the beach in Pond Inlet and I took a flight south. Being the one managing all the stocks onboard, I had planned my departure well and had showed Sam all the secret hiding places behind the water tanks, in the bilges, under the floors, etc. Where to find chocolate, chips, smoked fish, good cheeses, the last New Zealand leg of lamb and all the other treats that normally I was the only one to know about. I know they will be OK without me. They are two very competent sailors. They might just eat a lot of pasta for a few weeks…

Grant and Sam are currently near Clyde River, Baffin Island, on their way to Qikiqtarjuaq. Their Iridium communication system is still down (and has been since July 6th), but a new unit is being flown up on Friday with Scott, who will be taking my place onboard (he might have to cook them a few non-pasta meals). Hopefully, this new unit fixes their communications problem. Until then, no email and no weather, but we are in satellite phone contact every day. Meanwhile, I am resting at home, taking my antibiotics twice a day and thinking about them every minute of the day…
